Dramatic walk-off win for VSLL 50-70 All-Stars
In a game that went back and forth, the Viera-Suntree Little League 50-70 (Intermediate) All-Star baseball team saved the best for last.
Landon Norton scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the VSLL a 9-8 victory over West Melbourne in a District 2 tournament game in Suntree.
The VSLL now leads the best-of-five series 2-0 and can clinch the championship with a win Tuesday night at 6:30.
“It was a great team effort today,” manager David Jacobs wrote in an email. “We never gave up.”
West Melbourne led 5-1 in the third inning, but after a 45-minute rain delay, the VSLL scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead.
That lead wouldn’t hold, however, as West Melbourne rallied to go in front 8-7. Back came the VSLL, however, tying the score and then setting up a dramatic bottom of the seventh inning.
Norton started things off with a single and stole second base. A ground out by Aiden Baker moved him to third with two outs. That brought up Colin Mutz, and on a passed ball, Norton scored the game-winning run.
Norton, Jay Fowler and Baker all pitched for the VSLL with Baker coming up big in another key moment. West Melbourne was leading 8-7 and had the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth when Baker ended the threat with a strikeout.
Carson Cruse led the VSLL with three hits while Fowler had a team-high three RBIs.
It was a tough day for the VSLL as Beachside Little League scored late to turn a 4-4 game into an 8-4 victory at Rodes Park.
Isabella Kapatoes struck out 11 in six innings to lead the VSLL.
The team will return to action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Eau Gallie in what will be an elimination game for both teams.
