VSLL Majors have another big night at the plate, top Eau Gallie 20-8

Brennan Confreda delivers one of his four hits during the Viera-Suntree Little League Majors Baseball All-Star District 2 tournament game against Eau Gallie Tuesday night at Rodes Park. Confreda went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as the VSLL won 20-8.

If there’s one thing the Viera-Suntree Little League Majors baseball team has shown through the first three games of the District 2 tournament, it’s that this is a group that can score some runs.

A whole lot of runs.

After outscoring its opponents 27-4 in its first two games, the VSLL went on another scoring tear Tuesday night, beating the Eau Gallie Little League 20-8 at Rodes Park.

Brennan Confreda went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs to help lead the VSLL. Finn Goldinger went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Micah Cheatham went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and four runs scored.

Brandon Reiter also went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Dominic Leoni was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and also drove in a run. Evan Lipski had two hits, including a bunt single.

“We hit well,” VSLL manager Russell Cheatham said. “With the rainy days (last week), we found ourselves inside hitting a lot. The boys even got tired of hitting, which is something a kid doesn’t do. But it’s showing true out here.”

That was certainly the case in the second inning as the VSLL turned a 2-0 deficit into a 9-2 lead.

Robbie Caruso was safe on an error to help bring in one run and was eventually followed by Micha Cheatham’s two-run triple, RBI doubles by Reiter and Jonah Peacock, an RBI single by Goldinger and a two-run double by Confreda.

The VSLL would open up a 14-3 lead before Eau Gallie came back with a five-run fifth to make it 14-8. But instead of getting nervous, the VSLL responded with a six-run sixth to put the game out of reach.

Colton Marshall started the game on the mound for the VSLL and struck out three. He got some relief help from Izzy Birru and Deaglan McBride, who also struck out three.

The VSLL is now 3-0 in pool play, having outscored opponents 47-12.

“It’s been good,” Russell Cheatham said. “Different challenges in each one. Some of the games we ran away with early, so the challenge was to keep them competing throughout the game.

“Our second game (against South Beaches Little League), we went down by four early, so we had to fight back.

“This game was a little bit more back and forth. Great competition. Eau Gallie is always a hard team for us to beat. They kept competing. They didn’t stop competing. They kept a positive attitude. That’s all we’re asking of them.”

The VSLL will face West Melbourne in the final game of pool play tonight at 6:30, also at Rodes Park.
