The 2019-2020 Duran Men’s Golf Association season was the league’s best yet.

The DMGA recently crowned champions in five different flights following a season that saw an increase in both league members and average weekly attendance.

Competition in a season-long points race began in October and ran through March. The top 48 players qualified for the DMGA Chase for the Cup where the field was eventually trimmed to a final four for a final-round shootout to claim the championship.

Although the league wasn’t able to hold its annual awards luncheon this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the winners of each flight are still being honored for their accomplishments.

Viera’s Chris McBride was the winner in the A Flight. Len Harrison, also of Viera, won the B Flight.

Melbourne’s Steve Parlefsky took the C Flight, while the D Flight went to Ed Facas of Melbourne. The Red Flight was won by Sung Chung, also of Melbourne.

League membership was up to 82 this past season, a jump from 65 the year before. The average weekly attendance was 65, which represented a 10-player increase from last season.

Duran PGA head golf pro Matt Morrison attributed the growth in both players and attendance to “a great structure of offering both camaraderie mixed with friendly competition” and flights available for all skill levels.

“We even added a new forward tee flight for those who may be losing distance off the tee,” Morrison wrote in an email. “And this flight doubled in size from last year.”

Morrison also gave credit to the league’s sponsors, which allow the league to offer prize money and complimentary food and beverage functions.

This year’s league was sponsored by Golf Carts Unlimited (Robbie Rosenberger) and HD Dental (David Hernandez).

The league’s 2020 committee members included: Jerry McAnulty, Bruce Miller, Al Foppiano, Wayne McDowell, Dave Grant, John Pugsley, Smike Johnson and George Stergious.

“Duran was thrilled with our turnout for this year’s DMGA, the attendance was record breaking and thanks to our generous sponsors the players were able to enjoy an exceptional experience all season long,” Morrison wrote. “We continue to welcome new players and all skill levels are welcome to participate.”

The DMGA plays year-round, with tee times in the summer starting at 7:30 a.m. An 8:30 a.m. shotgun start is utilized from October through April.

The fee to join the league is $30 and includes USGA handicap service.
