Viera boys tied for 3rd after first day of state golf tournament

Viera High freshman Calvin Sierota led the way for the Hawks on Tuesday with an even-par 72. He is four shots off the overall lead.

The Viera High boys golf team finished the first day of the Class 3A state golf tournament in a tie for third place, seven shots off the lead.

The Hawks shot a team score of 302 at Deer Island Country Club in Tavares Tuesday. Plant High (Tampa) also shot 302, while Boca Raton came in at 296 and Lake Mary took the lead with a 295.

Freshman Calvin Sierota shot an even-par 72 for Viera, which left him in a three-way tie for 11th place overall, four shots off the tournament lead.

Senior Nico Gagliardi shot 75 for the Hawks, while junior Ryan Rozic came in at 77 and sophomore Tyler Greek finished with a 78. Sophomore Kyle De Cenzo shot 84.

The action will resume Wednesday at Deer Island as Viera will try to rally and duplicate the feat of the girls golf team, which won its second state golf championship last week.
