It should come as no surprise that the Holy Trinity boys and girls cross country teams swept the Class 1A, District 12 championships this weekend.

After all, coach Doug Butler’s Tigers have now won the title 12 times – including 11 in a row.

But for the Viera High boys, Saturday’s Class 4A, District 9 race was momentous indeed.

The Hawks placed five runners in the top 10 to win the first district cross country championship in school history.

“The men showed what it means to work hard and run smart,” Viera coach Ron Abel wrote in an email.

Junior Sam Shaffer led the way for the Hawks, finishing third overall in 16:37.34. The times for Miller, Cupoli and Krestan were all personal records.

Sophomore David Quigley (18:03.35) finished 12th and junior Rudy Valentin was 16th (18:08.92).

In the girls race, Viera High senior Molly Bryan had quite a day, finishing second overall in 20:32.35 as the Hawks went on to place third as a team.
