The Viera High swimming team capped off a successful season with a strong performance by three divers at the Class 3A state meet.

Freshman Sarah Rousseau finished fifth and senior Lillian Henderson was 17th in the girls 1-meter diving event held at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart over the weekend.

Another freshman, Ryan Just, placed eighth in the boys event.

It was quite an ending to a season that saw the Viera girls win the district championship for the second year in a row while Rousseau and Just both won Cape Coast Conference titles.

Morgan Woodard, who coached the Hawks along with her mother, Debbie Tweedie, was pleased not only with the team’s success, but how the swimmers were able to navigate through a season beset with weather issues.

“The team this year really understood that with all of the practice and meet cancelations, we had to show up to work hard when we were together,” Woodard wrote in an email.

“We had strong swimmers across all of the grades and even though we had a lot of strong seniors graduate last year, we also had a very strong group returning. They worked well with each other and helped each other out.

“With our diving, we had three freshman club divers join our team this year who brought a whole new level of competitiveness to the team. Some divers were going to our team practice, and then to their club practice so they could keep getting better. The older divers really took the new divers under their wings and helped mentor them.”
