Record-setting day for Viera swimmers at Class 3A regional meet

Jones, Marks heading to state meet on Saturday

Viera High swimmers Connor Jones and Connor Marks qualified for the Class 3A state meet on a big day for the Hawks at last week's regionals. Two school records were broken, there were 14 personal-best times and 11 swimmers finished in the top eight of their events.

The Viera High swimming program may be sending two swimmers to the Class 3A state meet, but that wasn’t the only news coming out of the team’s performance at last weekend’s regional meet.

Two school records were broken, 14 swimmers turned in the best times of their careers, and there were 11 top eight finishes as the Viera boys finished sixth in the team standings. The girls were seventh at the Region 3 event held in Lakeland.

Senior Connor Jones finished third and set a school record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.72. He also qualified for the state meet in the 500 free, where he came in second in 4:45.67.

Senior Connor Marks is also heading to the state meet after finishing fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.27.

Marks and Jones also teamed up with senior Bryce Hattrup and senior Dan Scougall to break the school record in the 200 medley relay. They finished in 1:45.80.

The girls 200 medley relay team of senior Caroline Maley, junior Ava Castro, freshman Marin Chapon and senior Kennedy Hewitt finished sixth in 2:00.12.

Other top eight finishers included sophomore Megan Greek, who was eighth in the 200 freestyle (2:07.63) and Marks, who was sixth in the 50 free (22.77).

Chapon was seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:02.49) and Hattrup was eighth in the boys 100 fly (55.90).

The Hawks also got a pair of eighth-place finishes by senior Dan Averill in the 100 breast (1:08.22) and in the girls 400 free relay, where Hewitt, Maley, Greek and Chapon finished in 3:56.51.

Viera’s boys 400 free relay team of Hattrup, Scougall, Jones and Marks was fourth in 3:23.41.

The state meet is scheduled for Saturday at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center in Stuart.
