Viera girls golf team claims another district title

Hawks win by … gulp … 42 strokes

Viera High's Samantha Brimhall, shown here hitting at the Duran Golf Club driving range, shot an 81 during the Class 3A, District 16 championship tournament on Wednesday. The Hawks won the district title for the ninth straight year.

Not even a windy, rainy day that featured generally bad playing conditions could keep the Viera High girls from winning another district championship.

The Hawks shot 324 as a team over 18 holes on Wednesday at Duran Golf Club to win the Class 3A, District 16 championship for the ninth consecutive year.

Vero Beach finished in second place, a whopping 42 shots back.

Manon Donche-Gay led the Hawks with a 74 to share medalist honors with Mary Kate Hiller of Vero Beach.

Samantha Brimhall, who played on Viera’s state championship two years ago, was next with an 81.

Trinity Falzone shot 84 and Briana Gabe finished with an 85. Mary Kate Smith was next with an 87.

Next up for Viera will be the Class 3A regionals, which are set for Monday at the Royal St. Cloud.
