Viera High junior Calvin Sierota shot a 1-over 73 to put himself in fifth place, just three shots behind the leader in the opening round of the boys Class 3A state golf tournament at the Mission Oak Inn Resort and Club in Howie-in-the-Hills.

The Viera girls, meanwhile, shot a combined team score of 333 that puts them in seventh place, 26 shots off the pace heading into today’s second round.

Sophomore Manon Donche-Gay led the Hawks with a 77. Senior Samantha Brimhall shot 84, freshman Briana Gabe had an 85 and sophomore Mary Kate Smith came in with an 87. Junior Trinity Falzone shot 92.

“Tough day today,” Viera girls coach Greg Ford wrote in an email. “Got off to a great start but ran into some difficulty for a few holes after that. It's a great experience for the girls and we will learn from the mistakes made today. We will come out tomorrow and look to improve our position and play more like we've been playing over the second half of the season.

“All in all, I'm extremely proud of these young ladies and what they've accomplished this season. Our future is incredibly bright and we will build on this experience.”
