Hawks stay focused, sweep Melbourne to reach district title game

So much for a letdown.

One night after beating St. Cloud in an emotional, five-set nail-biter in the opening round of the Class 6A, District 15 volleyball tournament, the Viera Hawks didn’t show any signs of slowing down in Tuesday’s semifinals with a 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 victory over Melbourne.

Viera (11-2) will play Winter Haven (14-5) for the district championship in a match scheduled for Thursday night at 6 p.m. at St. Cloud High School.

Sydney Williams had 11 kills, 10 digs, two aces and two blocks to lead the Hawks. Mak Carter had 10 kills, eight digs, two aces and two blocks.

Lauren Lewis finished with eight kills, 12 digs, a team-high six aces and one block. Kennedy Boswell also had eight kills.

Hannah Bradford led Viera with 17 digs. Kelly Merz had 35 assists, two aces and a block. Angie Durso had four kills and two blocks.

“I am extremely proud of our focus last night,” Viera High coach Sarah Wayne wrote in an email. “We went in there and took care of business with determination, and we have our eye on being district champions.”
