The Viera High girls golf team is moving on to next week’s Class 3A, Region 2 tournament.
And the best part for the Hawks is that they know they can play better.
Viera got off a slow start Tuesday at the Class 3A, District 7 tournament at the Royal St. Cloud Links before rallying to finish with a team score of 338. That put the Hawks in second place behind district champion Lake Nona, which came in at 305.
“That’s what it’s all about – surviving and advancing,” Viera coach Greg Ford said. “Lake Nona’s good. They’re one of the better teams around, so we knew it was going to be tough. We can play with them, but we have to be playing good in order to compete with them at their best.”
Brittany Odic shot a 38 on the front nine and finished with an 82 to lead the Hawks. Vivian Luu and Laine Bell both shot 84 and Rebecca Luchs had an 88. Heart Gerosano finished with a 94.
The regional tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, once again at the Royal St. Cloud. At stake will be a spot in the state finals, which are set for Oct. 30-31 at the Mission Inn & Resort at Howey-in-the-Hills.
“We’ll work hard this week and try to move forward,” Ford said. “There’s some other good teams coming in for regionals, so it’s going to be a challenge for us to be in that top three that moves onto the state finals, but they do take at-large teams. If we don’t finish in the top three, maybe we can get one of those at-large berths.
“We’ll just have to see. It’s in our hands. If we go out there and play well, and what we’re capable of doing, we’re going to have our chance.”
