It is turning out to be quite a season for the Viera High boys and girls cross country teams.
Viera’s varsity and JV boys both finished first at the Rockledge Raider XC Classic over the weekend, while the girls varsity team vanished eighth.
Sam Shaffer led the varsity boys, finishing second overall in 16:17, while Collin Quigley was 12th (17:17), Jeremy Dean came 16th (17:27) and Ryan Miller was 18th in 17:42. Alex Krestan finished 22nd in 17:47.
The JV boys took four of the first five spots led by Mike Groppel’s second-place time of 18:26. Walter Klaas was third in 18:49. Jordan Episcopo was fourth in 18:50 and Easton Juliano was fifth in 18:53. Tyler Sherrod came in 11th in 19:45
The varsity girls tea was led by senior Molly Bryan, who finished fifth in 19:44. She was followed by Anna Martin (23:14), Lexi Eastburn (24:30), Stephanie Schiller (25:20) and Jessa Celestini. (25:37).
Bryan, who said her goal at the beginning of the season was to break the school record of 19:37, is quickly closing in on that mark. In fact, all of the Viera girls are seeing their times drop, which is a great sign for the end of the season.
INAUGURAL BAYSIDE BEARS INVITATIONAL
A week before the Rockledge event, Viera took part in the first Bayside Bears Invitational. The varsity and JV boys both took second, while the girls varsity was sixth.
Shaffer finished fourth overall in that race (16:44), leading a pack of seven Hawks who finished in the top 20. The JV boys placed nine runners in the top 20, led by Rudy Velentin, who finished fifth.
Once again, Bryan led the girls. She was 14th in 20:56 and most of the girls dropped over a minute off their times from the previous race.
