Tigers get their wish – a third trip to regional finals

Vaught, Boos, Tobkes and Noe lead sweep of Astronaut

Holy Trinity's Emily Vaught, shown here against McKeel Academy, had 15 kills to lead the Tigers past Astronaut in the Class 5A regional semifinals Wednesday night. The win put Holy Trinity into the regional finals for the third straight year.

They didn’t come to the doorstep just to be denied.

So when the Holy Trinity Tigers got their opportunity Wednesday night, they stepped up their game.

Emily Vaught had 15 kills, Lara Boos had 13 and Emily Tobkes added 11 as the host Tigers defeated Astronaut 25-13, 25-23 and 25-8 in the Class 5A regional volleyball semifinals.

The victory puts Holy Trinity (20-5) into the regional finals for the third straight year.

The Tigers will travel to Orlando on Tuesday to face Lake Highland Prep (22-2) where they will try to advance to the state final four for the first time in school history.

“Our offense was very effective against Astronaut,” Holy Trinity coach Pete Klonowski wrote in an email. “The team hitting percent was over 0.400 which is excellent.”

Sophomore setter Emily Noe had 38 assists, 13 digs, one ace and one kill for the Tigers. Senior Courtney Noe had 15 digs, two assists and an ace. In addition to her 11 kills, Tobkes had three digs, a block and an ace.

Chloe Green had eight digs and Vaught had five digs and five aces to go with her 15 kills. In addition to her 13 kills, Boos had three digs, two blocks and an ace.

Kaytee Castillo had one kills, two blocks and a dig. Shelby Seage had two digs and Aly Tyson had one kill and one dig.

After getting to the regional finals each of the last two years, the Tigers have been determined all season to get back for a third time and take another crack at getting to the final four.

Thanks to Wednesday’s win, they’re about to get that chance.
