Success has brought a higher level of expectation for the Viera High football team.
And that’s just fine with head coach Kevin Mays.
“To me, it means we’ve done something right here,” Mays said on Monday, the first official day of practice for the 2015 season.
As part of the first day workout – which featured 97 players -- Mays and his coaching staff handed out special practice jersey tops (yellow for offense, black for defense) to a number of players who exemplified hard work and leadership in the offseason.
Those receiving the shirts included Hayden Kingston (QB), Zack Blanch (RB), Tre Nixon (WR), Hunter Ulrich (OL), Blake Ward (OL), Tim Eyler (WR), Don Jackson (WR), Trevor Merritt (CB), Evan Cruz (DB), Lance Reynolds (CB), Brandon Mays (LB), Marco Foreman (DL) and Justin Harrison (DL).
“Those are the guys that kind of set the tempo for us,” Mays said.
If the Hawks weren’t talented enough already with a number of players back from last year’s team that went undefeated in the regular season and won the school’s first district title, the addition of talented newcomers like Malek Folston (DB) and Alex Cabrera (WR) should make the Hawks even more dangerous this year.
