The Viera/Suntree Little League 11-12 All-Star baseball team is one win away from playing for the state championship thanks to a dramatic 8-7 win over Northwest Leon (Tallahassee) Saturday afternoon.

Joshua Mack, brought in to pitch with the bases loaded and two outs, in the bottom of the sixth inning, went to a 3-0 count on the Northwest Leon batter before coming back to strike him out on three straight pitches and secure the victory for the VSLL.

Declan McDermott hit a pair of two-run home runs, the second of which broke a 5-5 tie. J.T. Smith followed McDermott’s shot with one of his own to put the VSLL up by three runs and it just enough pitching to hold on for the win to improve to 2-0 in pool play.

McDermott’s first home run put his team up 2-0 and set up a big first inning that also saw Cole Tepley hit a home run and Brett Anderson drive in a run with a single.

Northwest Leon would rally from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game after the second inning, but as they have all summer, McDermott, Smith and Mack came through when the team needed it most.

The win set up a showdown Saturday night with perennial power Keystone (Tampa) for the right to play for the state title.

While the VSLL players had a chance to rest after their win over Northwest Leon, Keystone had to play Palm Coast and at 4:30 p.m., that game was still in a rain delay.

Keystone players will have to complete that game before facing the VSLL.

Stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted.

VSLL 10, Palm Coast 0 (from Friday night)

Now this is how you start a state tournament.

Tepley threw a no-hitter and allowed only one walk in four innings while also delivering a two-run double to help the VSLL roll over Palm Coast in the state tournament opener in Tallahassee.

McDermott hit a home run and Ethan Huffman added a two-run shot for the VSLL.
