We have our first district champion of the 2015 All-Star season.

The Viera/Suntree Little League 9-10 softball team defeated Palm Bay 15-13 Wednesday night to win the District 2 title.

Anna Brait had a double, three RBIs and scored three runs. Jace Jackson and Madison Ford each drove in two runs. Grace Rush reached base three times and scored three runs.

Grace Soehnlein struck out nine and was the winning pitcher.

Taylor Koslap made a huge defensive play with one out in the top of the fourth inning. Palm Bay had the bases loaded when Koslap made a running catch, then doubled off the runner at second, ending what could have been a big inning.

Palm Bay would stage a big rally in the final inning, but the game ended when Soehnlein recorded the final out on a called third strike.

VSLL will play for the Section 2 championship July 11-12 in Port St. Lucie.

9-10 Baseball (Gold) advances

The VSLL 9-10 Gold team secured the second spot in pool play with a 10-5 victory over West Melbourne Wednesday night.

Kai Arevena hit a two-run homer to punctuate a game that saw the Gold jump out to a 6-0 lead.

Lucas Glendinning and Skyler Raley each had a pair of RBI singles and Jack Malatino had a two-run double.

The victory gives the VSLL a 2-1 record in pool play, good enough for second place behind Eau Gallie (3-0) in Pool A. Palm Bay East (3-0) won Pool B with South Beaches (2-1) finishing second.

That sets up a double-elimination playoff between the four teams, beginning Friday night. The VSLL Gold will play Palm Bay East at 6:30 p.m. at Viera Regional Park.
