A two-way connector road from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Community property to Lake Andrew Drive is under construction in Viera.
The new road will provide parishioners with a second access route to the church at 5655 Stadium Parkway, across from the USSSA Space Coast Complex.
The road should be finished in a few months, said the Rev. John Britto Antony, pastor of the Viera church.
“We have been planning to build that connecting road so that we can alleviate some of the traffic congestion we experience every Holy Day and on Sundays,” Antony said. “This is going to be a great addition to the property.”
The road work is part of the church’s $3.1 million development campaign that began in September. The first part of the two-phase Master Plan Development Project includes the connector road, handicap parking and drop-off improvements in front of the courtyard, a new hardscape and two covered pavilions in front of the church, a covered walkway connector, a covered drop-off on the east side of the church and a new well for additional watering.
Phase Two calls for construction of a grotto based on the famous grotto in Lourdes, France, Antony said. The grotto also will contain the 14 Stations of the Cross, depicting the Journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary, and a statue of St. Michael the Archangel, also modeled after the statue in Lourdes.
Certified General Contractors of Melbourne is the construction company for the projects, while CPH Corp. of Sanford is the engineering firm and Atlanta-based Lyman, Davidson and Dooley is the architect.
Antony hopes the projects are completed by Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022. “That’s my goal, that’s my plan,” he said.
Founded in September 2001, St. John the Evangelist has more than 2,600 families today.
“Our parish is growing and more and more people are coming in so we felt this is the need of the times,” Antony said.
