As the first five days of the 2020 Florida Senior Games wrap up, the Duran Golf Club in Viera hosted the Senior Games golf tournaments on Dec. 8-9.
Head golf coach at Duran, Matt Morrison, said the golf club was fortunate to be chosen as the competition site this year.
“We’ve got the course in great shape. It’s going to be a challenge for them,” Morrison said.
Melanie Clegg of Merritt Island earned the lowest women’s scores of both days of the 36-hole event, an 84 and 82, to win the 50-54 age group gold medal with the overall lowest two-day total of 166. Her score was also the overall lowest women’s total since the 36-hole competition began in 2015 and established a new age group record.
Brian Belyea from Callahan, Florida wanted to play in the 36-hole event in the 55-59 age group after he won first place last year.
“The games are usually very competitive. Last year was wet also, like it is this year. They definitely test the skills by lengthening the course out for us,” Bellyea said.
The final four days of the 2020 Florida Senior Games include local competitions in the 5000-meter Power Walk and Track and Field at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy from Dec. 11-13. The 5K Road Race will be held at Ryckman Park in Melbourne Beach on Dec. 13.
