District tournaments start this week for soccer, girls basketball

District tournaments for soccer and girls basketball begin this week and John Anasa and his Viera boys soccer teammates are hoping to celebrate after this year's Class 6A, District 12 event. Viera, the No. 2 seed, has a first-round bye and is scheduled to host a semifinal game Friday night.

It’s that time of year again.

Time for the real fun to start.

After an exciting regular season filled with close games and big performances, district tournaments will begin this week for Brevard County’s soccer and girls basketball teams.

Let’s take a look at the schedule for Viera and Holy Trinity teams:

Holy Trinity girls soccer

The fourth-seeded Tigers (4-3-1) are scheduled to host No. 5 Lincoln Park Academy (5-7) Monday night at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A, District 10 tournament.

Holy Trinity, which has now won three in a row after a number of injured players returned to the lineup, could potentially face No. 1 seed West Shore (12-2-2) in the semifinals on Thursday. That game is set for 5 p.m. at Melbourne Central Catholic.

The tournament championship is scheduled for Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. at MCC.

Viera girls soccer

For the first time in more than a decade, the Hawks will not play the Melbourne Bulldogs for the district championship.

That was guaranteed after the final MaxPreps rankings were released and Viera moved up from the No. 4 seed to No. 3 in the Class 6A, District 12 tournament.

The Hawks (8-2-1) are scheduled to host No. 6 Sebastian River (4-10) in the quarterfinals Tuesday night at 6.

A victory there would put Viera against No. 2 seed Melbourne (11-2-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals. The winner of that game will play for the district title – possibly against No. 1 seed Martin County (13-1-2) -- on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. The semifinals and finals are set to be played at Melbourne.

The Hawks and Bulldogs have met in the district championship game for 11 straight years, including last season when Viera went into tournament seeded third while Melbourne was fifth.

Holy Trinity boys soccer

Not only are the Tigers (8-5) hosting this year’s district tournament semifinals and finals, they’re also the No. 1 seed in Class 3A, District 10.

As such, Holy Trinity has a first-round bye and is scheduled to play Friday at 5 p.m. against either No. 4 Edgewood (5-10) or No. 5 Cocoa Beach (2-8-2).

The title game is set for Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. West Shore (10-6-1) is the No. 2 seed.

Viera boys soccer

The second-seeded Hawks (12-1-2) have a first-round bye and are scheduled to host either South Fork (7-0-3) or Martin County (4-12-2) on Friday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals in the Class 6A, District 12 tournament.

Should Viera reach the title game, it would likely face top-seeded Melbourne (14-1-2) which would be looking for its 10th straight district championship. The title game is set for Feb. 10, at 7 p.m.

Holy Trinity girls basketball

Given that the top-seeded Tigers closed out the regular season with a 68-9 victory over second-seeded West Shore, it’s pretty safe to say Holy Trinity (14-3) will be heavy favorites in Class 3A, District 11.

The Tigers are set to face either Cocoa Beach (1-18) or tournament host John Carroll Catholic (5-5) in the semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The finals scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.

Viera Girls Basketball

After receiving a first-round bye, the second-seeded Hawks (13-5) will head to St. Cloud to face either East River (14-8) or Melbourne (4-16) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Class 6A, District 5 semifinals.

The finals are set for Friday at 7 p.m. St. Cloud (12-6) is the top seed.

Boys Basketball

With one week left in the regular season, Viera and Holy Trinity will continue to prepare for their district tournaments, which begin the following week.

Holy Trinity (16-2) is scheduled to play at Cocoa Monday night at 7 in its final game before the Class 3A, District 10 tournament.

Viera, meanwhile, will close out the regular season with a very challenging schedule. The Hawks (14-7) are set to play at Astronaut on Tuesday, host Eau Gallie on Thursday and then welcome Rockledge on Friday before heading to the Class 6A, District 5 tournament.
