Holy Trinity senior Alex Spies is going to the Class 1A state swimming & diving finals for the third straight year … and he’s going to have some company.
Elle Jacobsen had a huge day at the Region 3 finals at Lake Highland Prep, winning the girls 1-meter diving event. The junior tallied 447.10 points, easily outdistancing the second-place finisher, who had 407.30.
Freshman Natalie Doig, meanwhile, broke the school record for the 500 free for the third time this season, coming in second in 5:11.67 to earn her spot in the state finals. Doig also placed fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.96.
Spies, who holds several school records, came in third in the 200 IM (2:01.76) to qualify for the state meet. He also finished fifth in the 100 fly (54.65).
The Class 1A state meet is scheduled for Saturday at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center in Stuart.
Holy Trinity also got a strong performance at the regional meet from seventh grader Sophie Schuh. After dropping four seconds off her time in the 100 breast (1:17) and finishing fifth in the district meet, Schuh went on to finish 12th at the regional meet.
Eighth-grader Violet Flores also had strong swims in the 100 fly and the girls 200 free relay.
It was certainly a season to remember for the Middlebrooks family, too, as senior co-captain Ava Middlebrooks and freshman Jake Middlebrooks got a chance to swim on the same team for the first time since elementary school.
