Viera’s defense of its Class 4A boys cross-country state title is off to a strong start.
The Hawks made it back-to-back District 5 championships Saturday, dominating the field in a race hosted by Osceola High School in Kissimmee.
Viera’s girls finished third in their race and will also advance to the regionals, which are set for Friday at Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park in Boca Raton.
Senior Cameron Raney won the boys district championship with a time of 15:42. He was followed across the line by senior Aedan Rendek in 15:49, giving the Hawks a 1-2 finish.
Senior Aidan Carroll placed seven overall in 16:24 while sophomore Jack Girard was 12th in 16:35.
Freshman Michael Girard not only came in 21st, but he set a new personal record for the eighth race in a row, dropping his time to 17:08.
Other runners for the Viera boys included juniors Morgan Vici (17:59) and Jason Lee (19:09). Next up were sophomores Braxton Albright (19:43), Jansen Joss (19:54) and Brody Burrup (23:51).
Viera’s girls were led by freshman Addy Elwell, who finished seventh and set a new PR with a time of 19:33. Freshman Celina Coryell was 12th in 20:13 for the Hawks.
Senior Brooke Gerrits came in 17th in 20:27 and senior Isabella Narvaez finished 20th in 20:45. Sophomore Maddie Helms came in 28th in 21:22 and was followed across the line by senior Trinity Trett in 21:27.
Other finishers for Viera included freshman Rachel Devoid (21:59), senior Chelsea Paglia (22:12) and sophomore Hailey Cullingford (24:09).
