The Viera Charter School golf team just completed its first season.

The seven-member team, which played and practiced at Duran Golf Club, is believed to be just one of two middle school golf teams in Brevard County. The other is from Holy Trinity.

Team members include fifth-graders Michael Bender and Justin Visik; sixth-grader Even Carpenter; seventh-grader Christian Otero and eighth-graders Landon Keck, Harrison Buck and Maximus Mendoza.

The coach is Stewart Mendoza.

While there were more practices than matches in the first-ever season for the Viera Charter School’s golf team, being able to work out at Duran allowed the players to continue to build their love of the game while also improving their play.

The players certainly seemed to enjoy the experience.

In an email, Otero said his favorite thing about the golf team, “was that we were able to play every hole at Duran every practice and help each other perfect our swings.”

Bender said in an email he was happy to be a younger player because he is hoping to play again next year.
