Viera girls are heading back to state tournament

The Viera High girls golf team finished third at the Class 3A, Region 3 golf tournament Wednesday at the Cleveland Heights Golf Course in Lakeland. That puts the two-time state champions into the state tournament, which is set for Nov. 15-16 at the Mission Inn & Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills.

A two-year drought is over for the Viera High girls golf team.

The Hawks are heading back to the Class 3A state tournament at the Mission Inn & Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, which is set to take place Nov. 16-17.

Viera finished third in its regional tournament at the Cleveland Heights Golf Course in Lakeland on Wednesday, one shot behind the second-place team from Lakeland.

Ana Maria Tea shot 76 to lead Viera. Brittany Odic finished with an 82 and Vivian Luu had an 84. Katie Latham and Heart Gersano both shot 86.

It’s Viera’s first trip to the state tournament as a team since the 2018 season. The Hawks won state championships in 2010 and 2014.

“These girls are very resilient and talented, and I can’t wait to see how far they can make it at the state championship,” first-year coach Carl Guettler wrote in an email. “I am very proud of all the players.
