The Viera High girls golf team has been pushing all season to make a return to the state tournament.

On Tuesday afternoon, that hard work paid off.

The Hawks finished second at the Class 3A, Region 2 tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Royal St. Cloud Golf Links, earning Viera a spot in the state tournament for the second straight season.

Freshman Hannah Hall shot a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Hawks. Senior Brittany Odic shot 77 while junior Vivian Luu was right behind her at 78. Sophomore Margaux Blais came in with an 87 and junior Kapree Shepherd was the fifth golfer on the day for the Hawks.

“I couldn't be more proud of a group of student athletes than I am of this bunch,” Viera coach Joe Huau wrote in an email. “They set their goals, stayed focused and the results speak for themselves. More importantly they excel in the classroom as well as on the course.”

Viera’s team score of 315 put them behind perennial state title contender Lake Nona (302) and one shot ahead of third place St. Cloud (316).

It’s the second straight year, the Hawks have edged out St. Cloud by just one stroke. Last year, that one shot gave Viera a third-place finish and the final qualifying spot out of regionals.

The Hawks went on to finish 11th in the state tournament.

How well will they do this year? We’re about to find out.

This year’s state tournament, once again. is scheduled for next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Mission Inn and Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills.
