VSLL 8-10 All-Star softball team sweeps way to District 2 championship

Members of the VSLL 8-10 All-Star softball team pose with the District 2 championship banner after completing a three-game sweep of Greater West Melbourne with a 13-6 victory Thursday night.

The Viera Suntree Little League 8-10 All-Star softball team got some clutch pitching, timely hitting and strong defense during its District 2 tournament best-of-five series against Greater West Melbourne.

That’s how you get a three-game sweep.

Viera Suntree defeated GWMLL 13-6 Thursday night at Rodes Park to claim the District 2 championship and advance to next weekend’s sectional tournament.

“These girls left everything on the field tonight,” VSLL manager Dan Smith wrote in an email. “We couldn’t be prouder. It was great to bring a championship back to our Viera community that supports these young ladies.

“We’ve had private batting cages opened up to our girls during rainy days. All Florida Urethane, a sponsor, has donated gear to the girls. Viera High School softball and baseball players have volunteered their time. And an incredible fan base has cheered these girls on. It was great to bring home a win for them.”

Starting pitcher Alivia Roszkowiak went 3 2/3 innings, striking out 10, She also had a double and stole five bases.

Arianna Vega went 3-for-4 and scored twice. She also came on in relief of Roszkowiak in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and two outs. She ended the inning with a strike out and finished with six strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Alyssa Furst went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs.

Catcher Bella Smith went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, four stolen bases and threw out a runner trying to steal second base in the first inning.

Klara Latham walked three times and recorded the final out of the game on a ground ball to second base.

Emily Volz started the game at third base and switched to shortstop when Vega took over on the mound.

Outfielders Addison Steffen, Cara Main, Addison Couch and Morgan McNulty didn’t get a lot of action in the field, but did a good job of backing up the bases to prevent West Melbourne from taking any extra bases.

The VSLL also got a solid contribution during the tournament from Claire Doolittle. Gracen Backer missed the tournament with an injury, but is expected back for the sectional tournament.

Viera Suntree will face the District 17 champion in the sectional tournament, which is scheduled to begin June 26 at Rodes Park in West Melbourne.
